Two new varieties added

Posted by Rebecca Scott on

We've just added two more modern varieties: 'Autumn Fire' and 'Tintenblut'. 'Autmn Fire' actually looks good at any time, with its striking/contrasting red and green colours. This is a small type, not dissimilar to 'Green Globe' - apart from the added bright colour combination and a slightly smaller size. 'Tintenblut' translates as "Bleeding Ink" and is an exceptionally dark coloured sempervivum or houseleek - effectively "black" - with a great form. It's already popular with sempervivum enthusiasts on mainland Europe. We recently added 'Banyan', 'Deep Fire', 'Doeskin', 'Koala', 'Lavender & Old Lace', and 'Pink Lemonade' - all worthy of being...

Sempervivum of the month: April 2019 - and Rain Dance

Posted by Rebecca Scott on

Our choice for "sempervivum of the month" April 2019 is 'Densum'. This is one of our best selling sempervivums and is always excellent value for money. We usually include it in the "Ten of our choice" selection because it looks great, quickly forms a nice clump, and is super-reliable. We've recently added two superb modern varieties: 'Popocatepetl' - named after the active volcano in Mexico, so think "erupting lava" for a clue as to the colours you can expect - and 'Tesoro', which translates from Spanish as "Treasure". The drought at Komsberg Wilderness Nature Reserve unfortunately continued throughout 2018 and...

Sempervivum of the month: June 2018

Posted by Rebecca Scott on

Our "sempervivum of the month" for June 2018 is 'Traffic Lights'. This is a recent British-bred variety that stands out from the crowd. My capable husband struggles to photograph it, failing each time to capture this plant's excellent appearance. 'Traffic Lights' might not the best name in terms of an exact description - because it doesn't turn red, amber, green - but it does shift well between shades of purple and green.  A lot of our sempervivum varieties and species are now sold out, as you'll probably have noticed, and more types are close to joining this list. Whereas we've...

Bowls, sempervivum of the month (May), and extra varieties added

Posted by Rebecca Scott on

We've just added a choice of three attractive, rigid plastic bowls. These are ideal for displaying sempervivums, cacti, and other succulents requiring a reduced depth bowl. We use them ourselves for an educational display in a large greenhouse at Komsberg Wilderness Nature Reserve in South Africa, as well as personally at home on the patio in the back garden when we need a smaller size bowl. They look great. Our choice for "sempervivum of the month" May 2018 is 'Sprite'. This variety has consistently looked really good for the past few weeks. It isn't an obvious eye-catcher; nevertheless 'Sprite' wins...

A massive "Thank you!" to all of our new online customers

Posted by Rebecca Scott on

We'd like to say a massive "Thank you!" to all of our new online customers. My husband has been growing plants (retail and wholesale) at our Sussex nursery for 37 years - and I joined him in 2003 - but this year we decided to start a specialist online store for our wonderful range of sempervivums, together with a selection of cacti and other succulents. And it's working. We're getting orders from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and all over England. It's lovely to know our plants are going to a wider audience than ever before. I've had to learn to...
